Ferrous sulfate heptahydrate, commonly known as alum, is a light green or yellowish green crystalline solid. It is mainly used in iron fertilizer, pesticide, pigment, medicine, etc. in addition, it is also used in chromatographic analysis reagents, etc. It is a by-product produced in the process of producing a rare metal product by sulfuric acid method. The product appearance is light green or light yellow green crystalline solid.

Function and purpose:

Ferrous sulfate can be used to make iron salt, iron oxide pigment, mordant, water purification agent, preservative, etc;

1. Water treatment

Ferrous sulfate is used for flocculation purification of water and removal of phosphate from municipal and industrial sewage to prevent eutrophication of water.

2. Reducing agent

A large amount of ferrous sulfate is used as reducing agent, mainly reducing chromate in cement.

3. Medical agent

Ferrous sulfate is used for iron deficiency anemia; it is also used for adding iron to food. Long term excessive use may cause side effects such as abdominal and nausea.

It can also be used as a local astringent for chronic bleeding caused by hysteromyoma.

4. Colorant

a. Ferrous sulfate is used in the production of tannic acid ink and other inks. The mordant for wood dyeing also contains ferrous sulfate.

b. Ferrous sulfate can be used to dye concrete yellow rust.

c. Carpenter uses ferrous sulfate to dye Maple with silver color.

5. Agriculture

Regulating soil pH, promoting the formation of chlorophyll (also known as iron fertilizer), can prevent and control the yellow disease of flowers and trees caused by iron deficiency. It is an indispensable element for acid loving flowers and trees, especially for iron trees. In agriculture, it can also be used as pesticide to control wheat smut, apple and pear scab, fruit rot, and fertilizer to remove moss and lichen from tree trunk.

6. Analytical chemistry

Ferrous sulfate can be used as a chromatographic reagent.
