Material characteristics: 

Silicon carbide has stable chemical properties, high thermal conductivity, small thermal expansion coefficient, and good wear resistance. In addition to being used as an abrasive, there are many other uses, such as: applying silicon carbide powder to the impeller of a water turbine by a special process The inner wall of the cylinder block can improve its wear resistance and extend the service life by 1 to 2 times; the advanced refractory materials used to make it are heat-resistant shock, small size, light weight and high strength, and good energy saving effect. Low-grade silicon carbide (containing about 85% of SiC) is an excellent deoxidizer. It can accelerate the steel-making speed, and facilitate the control of chemical composition and improve the quality of steel. In addition, silicon carbide is also widely used to make silicon carbide rods for electric heating elements.

 

The hardness of silicon carbide is very large, Mohs hardness is 9.5, second only to the world's hardest diamond (10), it has excellent thermal conductivity, is a semiconductor, it can resist oxidation at high temperature.

Pure silicon carbide is colorless, and industrially produced brown to black is due to impurities containing iron. The rainbow-like luster on the crystal is caused by the protective layer of silicon dioxide on the surface.


Production process: 

Due to the low natural content, silicon carbide is mostly artificial. A common method is to mix quartz sand with coke, use the silica and petroleum coke in it, add table salt and wood chips, put it in an electric furnace, heat it to a high temperature of about 2000 ° C, and obtain silicon carbide fine powder after various chemical processes .

Silicon carbide (SiC) has become an important abrasive because of its great hardness, but its application range exceeds that of ordinary abrasives. For example, its high temperature resistance and thermal conductivity make it one of the preferred kiln furniture materials for tunnel kilns or shuttle kilns. Its electrical conductivity makes it an important electric heating element. The preparation of SiC products first requires the preparation of SiC smelting blocks [or called: SiC pellets, because they contain C and are super-hard, so SiC pellets were once called: emery. But pay attention: it has a different composition from natural emery (also known as: garnet). In industrial production, SiC smelting blocks usually use quartz, petroleum coke, etc. as raw materials, auxiliary recovery materials, waste materials, and are prepared through grinding and other processes to form a charge with a reasonable ratio and a suitable particle size (in order to adjust the permeability of the charge, an appropriate amount needs to be added Wood chips, the preparation of green silicon carbide must also add an appropriate amount of salt) prepared by high temperature. The thermal equipment for high-temperature preparation of SiC smelting blocks is a special silicon carbide electric furnace. Application range

Silicon carbide has four main application areas, namely: functional ceramics, advanced refractory materials, abrasives and metallurgical raw materials. Coarse silicon carbide materials can already be supplied in large quantities and cannot be regarded as high-tech products, and the application of nano-scale silicon carbide powders with extremely high technical content cannot form economies of scale in a short time.
